In our new editions of ‘Who Are Ya?’, we are re-living some of the greatest tournaments that we have seen in football over recent years and decades.

First up, we have one of the most iconic World Cup tournaments, and the first I ever watched as a youngster growing up, as I would get into school early to be allowed to watch the England games on a wheeled in tv… the South Korean/Japanese 2002 World Cup. From Ronaldo’s haircut and his prolific goal scoring in a incredible Brazil side, through to the infamous Beckham goal against Argentina, this tournament had just about everything, and it really engaged my generation with football.

So, without further ado, lets get on with the clues for this mystery player who played in, and was quite a big star of the tournament.

The Facts:

1. At time of writing (April 2021), this player is 44 years old.

2. The 2002 World Cup was this players first World Cup tournament, after having played 63 minutes of the 2000 Euro’s tournament.

3. In total, this player made 98 appearances for his country, however retired from international football in 2010 after injuries and issues over the captaincy left things end on a sad note.

4. In the 2 World Cups he has been involved in, he has been included in the all-star team each time, and was a medal winner in both tournaments.

5. In the tournament, he scored 3 goals, including the 3rd of an 8-0 victory in a group stage match-up, the 4th largest victory in the complete history of the World Cup.

6. This player was included in the 2002 World Cup all-star team.

7. He scored his nations’ quarter-final winner in the 2002 World Cup, against the USA, as the game ended 1-0.

8. He also scored the winner in the semi-finals, as again his side won 1-0 over the tournaments hosts.

9. Despite being the hero to take his country to the final, he received a booking for a tactical foul in the semi, resulting in him being suspended for the final. This led to a rule change of the yellow card amnesty rule which removes the risk of being suspended for finals.
