One of Argentina’s greatest talents, Riquelme remains arguably one of the most under-rated players of the past few decades. His time at Barcelona never truly got going as he was often out-of-favour with the manager, however his spells at Villarreal and Boca Juniors truly allowed him to show his talents.
As many have described, he is one of the last true number 10s, due to his skill, creativity and playmaking abilities. For myself, someone who is too young to have seen Maradona in his prime, and began watching football before the arrival of Messi, Riquelme and the various YouTube compilations of his skills truly opened up my view of watching football across to Argentina and South America.
