Top 5 – Euro 2020 Matches

What a month of football we have had. Highs, lows and everything in-between. Looking back at the feast of football, and our schedules suddenly facing at least a few weeks without daily football to consume our lives, we couldn’t cope. Therefore, we are looking back fondly at the tournament that has just completed, and this time picking out the top 5 matches (in our opinion) of Euro 2020.

As with every single thing on the internet, these choices are purely subjective and often led by personal bias, however if you disagree then head over to Twitter (@NextGoalWinBlog) and let us know what your top 5 matches of Euro 2020 were.

5. England 2-1 Denmark (Semi-Final)

The belief, the optimism and a fair bit of luck on our side, England were heading to a final in a major tournament for the first time since 1966. Arguably outplayed for the majority of the game, Denmark were resilient as they felt the backing of most neutrals and their fanatical support inside of Wembley stadium. It was a questionable penalty for sure, but the result remained the same. Oh to go back and have that night again, the world was much nicer back then.

4. Germany 2-2 Hungary (Group Stage)

This is how to close a group game, with every side having a moment during the 90 minutes where they had qualified, and also being bottom of the group. In the ‘group of death’, Hungary so nearly did the unthinkable and made it out of their tough grouping, however Germany were resolute and hung-in to gain their qualification. It was a double-screen kind of evening as this game and another dramatic 2-2 draw between France and Portugal fought for every football fans attention.

3. Turkey 0-3 Italy (Group Stage)

A year on from when it was meant to be played, but this game opened the tournament and a whole month of daily football staring some of the games’ top talent. It had everything for me this game, optimism in the day build-up, the meme material of the remote control car, Italy belting out their anthem, and then the dominant display against an incredibly disappointing Turkey side who had been tipped as ‘dark horses’ from just about everyone. Not the most dramatic or exciting of fixtures, but for sheer enjoyment and optimism it places in my top 5 and will be one I remember for a while.

2. Croatia 3-5 Spain (Round of 16)

Just the 8 goals in this knockout game, and 2 in extra-time to boot. Both sides had scraped through their respective groups, however both looked un-inspiring throughout at they look to regroup and refresh their nations football sides. In a game full of drama and goalkeeping error, Croatia netted twice in the closing stages of the 90 to take the game to extra-time, where Spain’s controversial and often derided striker Morata netted the 4th for his side and the game was settled for definite by Oyarzabal as Spain made it through but still seemed vulnerable.

1. France 3-3 Switzerland (Round of 16)

Switzerland had the performance of their lives as they took down reigning World Champions France and blew the competition wide open. Although several sides had impressed in the group stages, it was France who remained heavy favourites for the whole tournament, until they met Switzerland in the round of 16 that is. In a game full of twists, turns and brilliance, France appeared confident with Pogba running the show in midfield, until he was dispossessed in the final few moments which led to a last gasp equaliser from Switzerland. In the last 10 minutes, they brought 2 goals back to equalise and take the game to it’s dramatic penalty shootout finish. Mbappe missed the decisive spot-kick and although distraught at the time, he and his France side will undoubtedly return with a vengeance in the 2022 World Cup and beyond. But for that day, the victory belonged to Switzerland.
