POTM (Premier League) – September 2022

The Premier League is now well up and running, and we have seen some stellar performances as clubs begin to find their feet in the season. With September being a bit chaotic in terms of fixtures, with only a handful of league games taking place, a whole round of fixtures postponed due to the passing of the Queen and an international break taking away league football, we’ve been limited to a few games but still filled with entertainment.

Our Player of the month selection features in both his sides’ fixtures prior to the postponements and international break, and considering Gareth Southgate has some decisions left to be made ahead of the Qatar World Cup, he may just be hitting form at the right time.

Marcus Rashford led the way for Manchester United to truly turn around their early failures this season to make it 2 wins from 2, with a hard fought victory over Leicester, and thoroughly impressive win over league leaders Arsenal. Netting 2 goals and contributing 2 assists in these matches, he was involved in every goal his side scored in this month and thus was crucial in getting the 6 points and NextGoalWinner POTM award for September.

Match By Match

September 1st: Leicester City 0-1 Manchester United – Sneaking in this fixture into the September results, United edged the 3 points in the midweek win over Leicester. In the 23rd minute, Rashford set up Sancho for the winning goal as United held on for the win and look like they have really begun to turn their fortunes around. With Rashford leading the line as Ronaldo was benched for this one, he did well up top as he got the assist, made 2 chances (1 big chance), got 2 shots away and did his defensive duties when required. Although it was a tight and close matchup, this performance showed the new-look United grinding out victories and tidying up their defence. With a 7.0 FotMob rating, it wasn’t a show-stopping performance, but a huge contribution nonetheless.

September 4th: Manchester United 3-1 Arsenal – This game was a pivotal moment for Marcus Rashford and could well get him back in contention for England duties this winter, as Arsenal had been getting off to a flier this season, however the trip to Old Trafford allowed for a truly engaging matchup reminiscent of the derbies of old between these two sides. With new man Anthony getting his United career up and running early with the opener (set up by Marcus Rashford once again), Arsenal came back into it midway through the second half. Just 6 minutes later however, up stepped United’s no.10 who looks revitalised under the Ten Hag regime, as he cleared the Arsenal defence and netted the difference, with his 2nd and United’s 3rd coming just 9 minutes later, and Old Trafford was rocking as they picked up another huge result in this ‘transition’ season. Rashford played out a 9.2/10 FotMob rating with his 3 goal involvements, 100% shot accuracy, 100% long ball accuracy and threat in the final third. A great performance and a great result to keep Manchester United’s winning spell going and making the early defeats to Brighton and Brentford seem a long time ago.
