POTM (Premier League) – March 2023

March was yet another disrupted month of club football, with an international break putting a halt on the drama and excitement that is building in the final third of the season. With titles to still be decided, Champions League and European places to fight for and relegation looming, it’s a much needed break to recover from the action we have seen in the last few weeks.

This months winner has truly stepped up for his side this month. With Almiron their top scorer, his injury could have derailed Newcastle’s amazing season, however their record signing Alexander Isak has stepped up for when his side need them most, and this month bagged 3 goals which helped Newcastle secure 6 points with his 2 wins from 3 in the month of March. With his involvement in the Sweden national side, Eddie Howe will be hoping he returns in the same vein of form as this month showed.

Match By Match

March 4th: Manchester City 2-0 Newcastle United – Making just a 20 minute cameo in the loss to Manchester City, this one wasn’t anything of note for Isak in the month of March, however he did still get a shot on target, and was 100% for his shot, dribble, cross, tackle, ground duels success/accuracy. A tough loss against a very tough opponent, but they certainly didn’t let this derail their month.

March 12th: Newcastle United 2-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers – Rather than allowing the City loss to effect his side, Eddie Howe got his team back firing just over a week later in their next game. Isak opened the scoring after just 26 minutes, and although they were pegged back in the 70th, this leveller only lasted until the 79th minute when Almiron grabbed the winner. Isak stepped up as in his starting spot, as he got on the scoresheet, had 100% shot accuracy and getting his first start since mid-February and first goal since 15th January, he certainly grew in confidence with this strike.

March 17th: Nottingham Forest 1-2 Newcastle United – Going into the international break on top form, Alexander Isak made it 3 goals from his last 2 games, and secured the points in a hard-fought victory against Nottingham Forest. With the loss of Almiron through injury, Isak has stepped up to the plate this month, and his brace and composure to put away the last minute penalty winner (despite a fair bit of gamesmanship from the Forest players), showed what he can offer Newcastle, for their club record fee. With his man of the match performance, he drew the most fouls, maintained 100% shot accuracy and managed to get away 5 shots, and sealed his month off in perfect style, to claim the NextGoalWinner award.
