POTM (Premier League) – March 2022

POTM (Premier League) – March 2022

March seems to have flown by in a footballing sense, with an array of fixtures being squeezed in for some prior to the international break, while other sides and players have had almost a month away from the game. With some clubs fitting in 4/5 games prior to the break, others have had just one. With that in mind, it’s been a strange time to see which players have stood out consistently, and therefore this months’ NextGoalWinner POTM award may well have gone to several players, but we have made our choice, and we think it’s the right choice.

With Ronaldo scoring a hattrick in his only Premier League appearance this month, Ivan Toney netting 5 in 3, Saka with 3 goal involvements in 4 almost season altering performances, Robertson playing 3 and not conceding a single goal in the month, it’s been tough to determine how we could compare some of these amazing performances. However, we have decided, and the award is returning to Tottenham Hotspur for the first time since October 2020, as their main man Harry Kane had a terrific month, scoring 4, assisting 2 and helping his side claim 3 wins from 4 games. Prior to going away with England and edging closer to the all-time England scoring record, he hit a rich vein of form for his club and may well be helping them keep in contention for the top-4 spot.

Match By Match

March 7th: Tottenham Hotspur 5-0 Everton – Following a shock exit in the FA Cup, Spurs’ final hope of ending their trophy drought this year, they will be aiming now for the ‘4th placed cup’ as they returned to Premier League action, taking out their frustration of the Middlesbrough loss at home to struggling Everton who were lacklustre against Spurs’ dominant attacking display. Kane was loving his time on the pitch as he played the full 90, bagged 2 goals and earned himself an 8.8/10 rating (FotMob rating). Having the boost of attacking talent around him, both Kulusevski and Son supporting Kane has really brought the best out of him, and it was a free-for-all as the newly acquired Swede grabbed 2 assists, Son got an obligatory goal and Matt Doherty had two assists in his wing-back role. Kane got 4 shots away and netted twice, made 1 key pass, made 4 recoveries and won both his aerial duels. It was a great whole team performance which had Conte jumping for joy, and Kane at his best.

March 12th: Manchester United 3-2 Tottenham Hotspur – This dominant Spurs performance was fairly short lived as they returned to earth with a bang as they ran into Cristiano Ronaldo at his best. Kane was no match for the Portuguese legend, as he could only muster a penalty goal to level things in the first half, before Ronaldo again came to the forefront and netted twice more to take the 3 points and dent Spurs’ top 4 hopes. Kane did himself proud however and this wasn’t a trouncing by any means against United, as Spurs looked strong throughout the second half and had United worried. Kane did have the fewest touches of any outfield player playing the 90, however he was the most fouled player, he has 100% shot accuracy, and was ultimately a threat and danger in the box, however it wasn’t a game he could get a hold of and at times it passed him by as he couldn’t step up. Despite all of this, it was his 3rd goal in 2 games and Spurs’ won’t be too concerned with plenty of football left to play, and their Champions League hopes still alive.

March 16th: Brighton & Hove Albion 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur – Kane was on the scoresheet once again, as they went away to Brighton and grabbed all 3 points. With 6 shots at goal (2 on target), making 3 key passes and being fouled 3 times, he was a handful in the game in traditional Kane form. Continuing his scoring run, and helping his side take 3 points against an often difficult Brighton side, earnt Kane an 8.4/10 rating (joint highest).

March 20th: Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 West Ham United – In their final league game, and getting their 3rd win from 4 games, Kane failed to find the net for the first time this month, however he very much contributed to the win, getting 2 assists to drag his team to the win against a seemingly exhausted West Ham side, out of sorts following their Europa League triumph. Completing the most dribbles (3), winning the most duels (6), having 3 shots, making 4 key passes and making 2 recoveries, it was a leaders performance and again Spurs avoided another banana skin opponent. His 8.9/10 rating means Kane ended the month with 4 goals, 2 assists and an average 8.3/10 rating. With the international break following, Spurs ended the month in 5th, 3 points behind Arsenal, and with everything still to play for.
