POTM (Europe) – October 2020

It’s the 2nd month of the ‘prestigious’ NextGoalWinner’ Player of the Month award, and this month’s European winner, is non other than Bayern’s goal-machine, Robert Lewandowski.

With a total of 9 Bundesliga goals from just 3 games, he averaged an astonishing 3 gpg in the league as Bayern have truly picked up where they left off from last season, by steamrolling all their league competitors. Although failing to truly contribute in his usual fashion in the Champions League, he did add to his October haul with 2 goals and an assist during Poland’s 3-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Nations League international break.

From all the competitors over this month’s round-up, such as; Mbappe, Oyarzabal and Kane, Lewandowski has, in just 4 games this month bagged 11 goals, while his clinical Bundesliga scoring has meant that in those 3 fantastic league display’s he has reached 10 league goals for the season. Not too shabby for just 5 games into the season.

Well played Rob, keep it up and Bayern might just win the league.

Match By Match

October 4th: Bayern Munich 4-3 Hertha Berlin – What a start to the month for the striker, with a perfect hattrick in a dramatic game. Bayern’s main man bagged all 4 of their goals as they escaped with a last minute penalty winner from Lewandowski, who kept his cool from the spot. He earnt himself a perfect 10/10 rating from WhoScored for his dominant performance, after 4 goals, 13 shots (7 on target), 1 key pass and an 80% pass accuracy. A truly class performance from the goal scoring machine.

October 17th: Arminia Bielefeld 1-4 Bayern Munich – Following the international break, Robert returned to Munich to continue his Bundesliga storm. In the only league game this month in which he failed to score at least 3 goals, he managed 2 goals and an assist, so not too shabby I suppose. Receiving a 9.8/10 rating, he had 6 shots on goal (3 on target), made 3 key passes and had a 91.7% pass accuracy. Another day in the office by Lewandowski’s standards.

October 24th: Bayern Munich 5-0 Eintracht Frankfurt – The third and final Bundesliga game for Bayern this month, and another goal-fest as they put 5 past Frankfurt. Lewandowski nabbed 3 of the goals to bring his league tally into double figures, and his 9.31/10 earnt him the star man award once again.

Champions League: Admittedly, Lewandowski is yet to truly get going again in the Champions League, as he struggled to really get involved and make his mark in Bayern’s 2 opening wins of the competition. Earning a 6.72/10 average rating for the 2 matches against Atletico Madrid and Lokomotiv Moscow, he was fairly quiet as Bayern picked up impressive wins. With the early November clash against Salzburg, he has definitely rectified this slow start, but that’s for another day.

International: During the mid-October International break, Lewandowski led the line once more for Poland in the Nations League. On the 11th, the side earnt a well-deserved 0-0 draw with Italy, as the goal machine stalled, and failed to get on the score sheet in his 82 minutes of game time. He failed to register a single shot, make any key passes and only had 32 touches in a fairly subdued performance for the striker. This earnt him just a 6.02/10 rating on WhoScored, his lowest for the month.

Just 3 days later in the matchup with Bosnia and Herzegovina, he more than made up for his quiet night against the Italians, by bagging 2 goals and an assist in the 3-0 impressive victory. He showed true scoring instincts with his 40′ and 51′ finishes, with his assist for teammate Linetty breaking up his strikes. Earning a 9.22/10 rating, he managed 8 shots (3 on target), 1 key pass and a 81.8% pass accuracy. Not too shabby for 58 minutes of game time.
