POTM (Europe) – March 2023

POTM (Europe) – March 2023

March was yet another disrupted month of club football, with an international break putting a halt on the drama and excitement that is building in the final third of the season. With titles to still be decided, Champions League and European places to fight for and relegation looming, it’s a much needed break to recover from the action we have seen in the last few weeks.

This months winner is a player that has truly shone in Serie A, essentially securing the title for Napoli even at this stage of the season, and with the Champions League still well up for grabs. Victor Osimhen has played 4 games for Napoli this month (including Champions League) and bagged 4 goals and 1 assist in that time. With his club cruising to the title, the comfortable Champions League victory will also be a huge boost. A player who has been incredible all season and is more than deserving of this months award.

Match By Match

March 3rd: Napoli 0-1 Lazio – With 2nd placed Lazio picking up a win over the league leaders, usually this would spark panic and worry for most title contenders, however Napoli are so far ahead this year that it’s more a case of pride they have lost from this defeat. Although they won’t like any potential hiccups in the rest of the season, and Osimhen won’t like not getting on the scoresheet, it’s not the end of everything for Napoli, and they showed later that they could brush themselves down, and pick up from here.

March 11th: Napoli 2-0 Atalanta – After the loss last time out, they made up for it with a comfortable win over Atalanta who are themselves fighting for European qualification. Osimhen couldn’t grab a goal for himself, but did claim an assist for the 1st, this time turning provider for Kvaratskhelia. The rest of his performance was solid, but it was his last 2 games of the month that put him ahead of anyone else in the monthly recognition.

March 15th: Napoli 3-0 Eintracht Frankfurt – After 2 games without a goal, it was only a matter of time, and after already grabbing a 2-0 1st leg victory, this game was cruise control yet again for Napoli, as their Nigerian forward bagged his first of 2 braces this month, his first of 2 man of the match awards and flying into the quarter final stages of the tournament. With 100% shot accuracy, he couldn’t miss with another solid showing from Spalletti’s side.

March 19th: Torino 0-4 Napoli – Making sure they head into the international break in perfect form, Osimhen bagged another brace to make it 4 goals in his last 2, his second man of the match performance and maintain Napoli’s huge gap at the top of Serie A. While he has done this all season, if they can keep Osimhen in form and fit, there’s really no reason why they couldn’t go on in Europe and be the true surprise package of the season.
