POTM (Europe) – January 2023

January saw the start of a new year, and the return from the winter breaks for club football. After a disjointed end to 2022 with international football, club football has returned to centre-stage, as clubs are continuing to battle across the leagues to set themselves up for a successful second half of the season.

Victor Osimhen has been in top scoring form for the year thus far, as he bagged 5 goals and 1 assist in the 5 league games played in the month. With some key goals which helped get his team over the line in some key games, Napoli look set for a strong end to the year, and Osimhen will be a key player throughout.

Match By Match

January 4th: Inter 1-0 Napoli – Starting off the month and the year with defeat, Napoli had to quickly shake off the 1-0 defeat against Inter. In what could become a major title battle as the year progresses, Osimhen couldn’t quite contribute in his usual way as Inter stayed resolute after going ahead in the 56th minute. Osimhen had to settle for a 5.8/10 FotMob rating due to what had been a quiet 90 minutes to start the year.

January 8th: Sampdoria 0-2 Napoli – After the disappointment of losing to Inter, Napoli travelled to Sampdoria, and Osimhen got off the mark for 2023, as he bagged the opener in the 19th minute to put his side ahead early and following the red card for Rincon, Napoli continued to push on. Despite having the fewest touches on the pitch, Osimhen’s goal, 100% dribble success, 100% long ball accuracy and 5 shots earned him a more respectable 7.6/10 FotMob rating.

January 13th: Napoli 5-1 Juventus – In the most dominant display of the month, Napoli hosted Juventus and really showed their attacking quality. Osimhen opened the scoring in the 14th minute, and added the 4th in the 65th minute, as he showed his quality against a poor Juve side. Moving Napoli 10 points clear, Osimhen’s 2 goals and assist earnt him a 9.2/10 FotMob rating as he reached 4 goal contributions in 3 games.

January 21st: Salernitana 0-2 Napoli – After the huge win over Juventus, Napoli were knocked out of the Coppa Italia on penalties, against Cremonese in which Osimhen was only used as a very late cameo in extra-time, and despite converting the penalty in the shootout, it wasn’t enough to see Napoli through. Returning to the league however, Napoli got back to winning ways against Salernitana as Osimhen added the second just after half-time to secure a 2-0 win and get the striker back in scoring form. Things were fairly quiet after the goal, and Osimhen secured a 7.9/10 FotMob rating as he bagged goal number 4 for the year, and Napoli made it 3 wins from 4 in the league.

January29th: Napoli 2-1 Roma – Rounding things off, Osimhen opened the scoring against Roma as he bagged the first in their 2-1 win, scoring in the 17th minute. With 5 goals and 1 assist for the month, his efforts helped to keep Napoli secure at the top of the table, while they won 4 out of 5 in the league. With a 7.3/10 FotMob rating, it was again the crucial goals that earned the plaudits for Osimhen.
