Arsenal Rise To Occasion
Arsenal’s 2–0 win away at Newcastle United was arguably their most impressive performance of the run-in. St James’ Park had become one of the league’s most hostile venues, with Newcastle unbeaten at home since February and firmly established in the top-four race. Yet Arsenal arrived with composure, intensity and a clear sense of purpose.
The breakthrough came via a Sven Botman own goal, forced by Arsenal’s relentless pressure, before Martin Ødegaard sealed the win with a superb long-range strike. It was a goal worthy of the occasion and underlined Arsenal’s growing maturity in big moments. Crucially, they never allowed Newcastle’s physicality or atmosphere to knock them off their rhythm.
While Manchester City still held the advantage in the title race, Arsenal’s victory ensured the pressure remained firmly on Pep Guardiola’s side. After questions had been raised about Arsenal’s nerve following dropped points in April, this was a reminder that Mikel Arteta’s young squad were not ready to fade quietly.
West Ham’s Hammer Blow
West Ham United’s 1–0 victory over Manchester United was massive at both ends of the table. For the Hammers, it was a lifeline, three priceless points that pushed them further clear of the relegation zone and rewarded David Moyes’ pragmatic, disciplined approach. For United, it was a damaging setback in their pursuit of Champions League qualification.
Saïd Benrahma’s first-half goal owed much to a rare mistake from David de Gea, whose handling error summed up United’s nervy display. West Ham, meanwhile, were organised, aggressive and willing to suffer without the ball. Declan Rice was outstanding in midfield, leading by example in what was a captain’s performance.
The result highlighted United’s ongoing struggles away from home and their inconsistency against lower-half sides. With rivals closing in, Erik ten Hag suddenly found his team under renewed pressure, while West Ham left London Stadium buoyed by a result that could ultimately define their season.
Goal Fest
If the top of the table brought tension, the bottom delivered chaos. Matchweek 35 was packed with high-scoring thrillers that had huge implications for survival. Fulham’s 5–3 win over Leicester City exposed the Foxes’ defensive fragility and left them staring anxiously over their shoulders, despite flashes of attacking quality.
Everton’s stunning 5–1 demolition of Brighton was perhaps the shock of the weekend. Sean Dyche’s side, criticised for their lack of goals, suddenly exploded into life at the Amex. The win not only boosted Everton’s goal difference but also their belief, showing they were far from beaten in the survival fight.
Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest’s dramatic 4–3 victory over Southampton felt like a relegation six-pointer in every sense. Seven goals, momentum swings and raw emotion encapsulated the desperation of the battle. For Forest, it was a huge step towards safety; for Southampton, it all but confirmed their bleak outlook. Matchweek 35 didn’t just entertain, it reshaped the relegation picture in unforgettable fashion.
Matchday 35 Player of the Week: Morgan Gibbs-White With a goal and assist, Gibbs-White showed real quality for Forest as they came out on top in the back and forth clash with Southampton
Matchday 35 Game of the Week: Fulham 5-3 Leicester City Although Forest-Southampton came close to this week’s game of the week, the 8 goal clash between Fulham and Leicester just edges it as Leicester tried for a late surge, but it wasn’t to be as Fulham pick up a big 3 points.
