Matchday 20 (2023/2024)

Week 20 saw us bridge the gap from 2023 to 2024, and across the end of the festive period, the football continued to be chaotic, dramatic and full of goals and talking points.

Let us know over on Twitter (@NextGoalWinBlog) if you have seen anything in a game that you think we should be talking about, or have anything to share from what you’ve seen at a game that week. Any funny stories, tactical analysis or general comments will be featured.

Fulham Shock Arsenal

For many, the headline of the festive round came from Craven Cottage, where Fulham came from behind to beat Arsenal 2–1. Arsenal looked to be cruising early on, with Bukayo Saka scoring inside the opening minutes. It seemed like business as usual for the Gunners, who had been so consistent all season.

But Fulham refused to fold. Raúl Jiménez equalised before half-time with a composed finish, sparking a wave of belief among the home fans. The decisive moment came just after the hour mark when Bobby De Cordova-Reid capitalised on a loose ball from a corner scramble to fire home the winner. Fulham’s resilience and opportunism turned the match on its head.

The result carried significant implications. Arsenal had rarely lost when taking the lead, and this defeat snapped their impressive run, raising questions about their momentum in the title race. For Fulham, it was a morale-boosting victory, their first league win over Arsenal in over a decade, proving that even mid-table sides can pull off remarkable upsets.

Above all, the game was a reminder of the Premier League’s unpredictability. No lead is ever guaranteed, and the underdog spirit remains very much alive. Arsenal learned the hard way that consistency at the top requires constant vigilance, especially against determined opponents.

Liverpool Make A Statement

While Arsenal were stumbling in London, Liverpool delivered a statement of intent at Anfield, defeating Newcastle 4–2 on New Year’s Day. After a quiet first half, the match exploded with six goals in the second, showcasing Liverpool’s attacking firepower.

Mohamed Salah, after an early penalty was saved, quickly made amends by opening the scoring and later converting a second penalty. Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo also found the net, putting Liverpool in firm control, while Newcastle managed a late header from Sven Botman that could not change the outcome. The match became a thrilling showcase of pace, precision, and attacking flair.

This win did more than add three points to Liverpool’s tally. It demonstrated that they remain serious contenders in the title race, especially after Arsenal’s slip-up. The Reds’ ability to dominate games, exploit mistakes, and finish clinically was on full display, sending a message to the rest of the league: Liverpool are ready to challenge for the top spot until the final whistle of the season.

For fans, it was a perfect New Year spectacle, a mix of drama, goals, and the relentless energy Liverpool are known for. It reaffirmed their credentials as a team that can turn any match into a statement and keep the title race thrilling.

Stalemate

Not every talking point came from dramatic upsets or title clashes. West Ham and Brighton played out a goalless draw at the London Stadium. While the match lacked goals, it was an important contest for both teams in the context of the season.

The game was tightly contested, with few clear chances. Brighton controlled possession at times but struggled to convert dominance into goals, while West Ham defended resolutely to secure a valuable point. Both teams walked away with something, even if neither gained the upper hand on the scoreboard.

For West Ham, the draw maintained a measure of stability in a season where relegation threats linger, while Brighton’s ability to earn a point on the road helped consolidate their mid-table position. These quieter games may not grab headlines, but they are crucial in shaping the dynamics of the league table.

In the Premier League, survival, consistency, and incremental gains can be just as important as flashy victories. Matches like this underline that even the less spectacular fixtures carry weight, influencing momentum and confidence as the season progresses.

Matchday 20 Player of the Week: Cole Palmer Palmer’s season continues to be a fantastic move for him, with 2 goals and an assist in the win over Luton. While the hosts pushed back into the game late on, the young forward’s work put his side in full control and claimed the 3 points.

Matchday 20 Game of the Week: Liverpool 4-2 Newcastle United With a good number of games this week being close affairs, the game between Liverpool and Newcastle brought plenty of goals, and a final 20 minutes in which the game could have gone either way, until Salah sealed the result late on.
