With it looking almost certain at this point of which 3 teams will be relegated, I heard a question on a podcast recently which asked, ‘where would a best combined XI of the relegated clubs finish in the Premier League?’

When you look at the teams going down this season, there are some gems of quality in there, however with the underperforming nature of all 3 sides across the season, I was struggling to imagine a world in which a best combined squad would still be able to survive against some of the teams they’d be up against.

Premier League Week 33 ✍️

As we head towards the culmination of a strange season, and after the fallout of some midweek European clashes, week 33 of the Premier League all but cemented several key parts of this season. We saw some of the European hopeful sides battling it out as they push to see which European tournament they may fall into, the all-but relegated sides had some tricky ties against the top of the table teams, and a few teams struggling of late had to content with teams in a strong run of form.

With Liverpool looking all-but secured as Premier League champions, the celebrations will feel like double this summer as the club weren’t able to fully celebrate their 2020 title due to Covid restrictions.

As Arne Slot leads the team to success in the first season post-Klopp, and with questions still swirling around the futures of a few key players at the club, it got us thinking back to the 2020 side, and wondering which was the better team.

After a fair bit of thought, I personally think the 2020 iteration of Liverpool is perhaps the slightly better side, however with a few changes to the team since then, and the development and experience of those key players, it could well be argued this version of Liverpool’s side would edge it.

Which version of Liverpool do you think is better? And who would win if the 2 teams were to face off against each other? The exciting and dynamic side under Klopp, or the more experienced and versatile team of Slot?

After a poor return to club action in the defeat to Nottingham Forest, there was talk of signs of improvement from United, and so a clash with rivals City could have helped United boost momentum ahead of a key European clash on Thursday. Despite this, or perhaps with one eye on the Thursday game, United showed a real lack of quality in the final third as they were undoubtedly the better side on the day against City, and could have won comfortably if their attack had produced a key moment. With United in control for large spells, it adds to the missed opportunities for United this season, and leaves many questioning just how much needs to be fixed in this side before things can look positive once again.

Bringing Titles 🟥

In under 6 months of his time at Manchester United, Ruben Amorim has tried to implement his own style on the club, and turn around the shipwrecked club at all levels. With a write-off ‘free-hit’ of a season to work with his players, he has spoken honestly and openly about his thoughts towards the project.

In a recent interview however, Amorim spoke again about getting Manchester United to be Premier League contenders yet again, and he believes he can be the manager to do this. While we’ve heard many in the past few seasons speak in a similar way, it feels like fans could have a genuine reason to believe the latest manager in the dugout, and his system takes shape.

After hearing this from the manager, I wanted to hear the thoughts of fans of United and other clubs, to see if the football world agrees that he can get Manchester United back to title-contenders, or is he just the next manager in line to try and fail to turn around the club?

In the latest round of league games, as we near the finale of an interesting season, we saw all 20 teams taking part in the weekend’s games which produced some big moments. We saw Southampton confirmed as being relegated at the earliest stage of any team in PL history, Liverpool stumbled on their way to the title with a surprise defeat to Fulham, and we had one of the most dull ends to the weekend as the Manchester derby highlighted some of the biggest problems with modern football.

After an extended break through the international camps and the FA Cup action this past weekend, United travelled to Nottingham for a tricky test against a side looking to secure a top 4 finish. After being beaten at Old Trafford earlier in the season, Forest made it a league double as former United youngster Anthony Elanga sped through United’s defence and produced a stunning solo finish which showed a huge mis-step in letting the player leave as United struggled to then capitalise on any of the chances they were creating.

Scheduling 📆

With clubs continuing to talk about scheduling issues, I can’t help but feel like the last international break was an opportunity to combine these international camps into the summer months between tournaments. Rather than players jetting off around the world for 2 weeks every few months, on the alternative years without a major tournament, we should have international camps where countries spend a whole month playing through their qualifiers and even Nations League games. As a result, we get a more spread out season for club football, and the enjoyment can grow around an international break rather than the more dull and drab affairs we’ve become accustomed to.

What do you think could be done to improve the scheduling issues, and what do you make of the current international break setup?

After the international break and FA Cup action, the Premier League returned for the ‘run-in’ as we were given some midweek action to ease us back into the club game. In this round of fixtures we saw Liverpool edge closer to the league title, Tottenham’s struggles continued, Manchester United hit another bump in their road to building momentum and Ipswich Town appeared to give themselves a boost towards survival, however Wolves maintained their gap with a win.

Pre-Window Transfers 💼

With several clubs already confirming deals being done outside of the transfer window dates, do you agree with clubs being allowed to make their deals outside of the parameters of the window?

Obviously as the players don’t join the squads until the approved date, it allows clubs to sort their business early, and possibly even make deals before the competition heats up and clubs become more willing to outbid, but to me it just feels like a poor precedent to have when there are set times for transfers to be made.

For me, the transfer window should be 1 month in January and 1 month in July between seasons, and clubs are only allowed to contact players, agents and other clubs during this window. No pre-agreements, no verbal contracts and just a defined set period that doesn’t drag on for months on end.

I believe the transfer window has become largely boring due to the amount of information we are able to access from the ITK sources, and so a shake up to the system would certainly be something I’d like to see more of, and the less time clubs have to make deals, the more hectic those dates would become.

What are your thoughts on these issues, and do you think the transfer window setup needs to be improved to bring back some of the surprise and drama?

As we continue to play catch up on a few blog posts from the last few weeks, our POTM awards continued into 2025 as we went through each round of games to award a player of the month across Europe’s top 5 leagues for February as domestic action blended with some European games. With a busy month of action in February, there were a couple of stand-out performers, but one in particular shone above the rest to be a deserving winner of February’s award.

Mid-Season Friendlies 🤝

With growing frustrations around scheduling and pressures being put on football teams both physically and mentally, it was a surprise to see Aston Villa taking part in mid-season friendlies over the international break.

While it’s a well-known fact that clubs will often use breaks in the calendar to play behind closed doors friendlies against other local sides, to see a team publicise their mid-season outings feels a bit of a poor move given this season has seen FA Cup replays being scrapped, growing pressures and frustrations around the minutes being played by footballers and calls for teams, especially those in Europe to be better protected by those in power.

On one hand, I think it makes sense to keep players ticking over who aren’t involved in the internationals, and this will happen at many big sides over the break, however I can’t help but feel like this should be something that along with end of season worldwide trips are limited or scrapped as it creates a precedent for finances to reign over player welfare.
