Premier League Week 23 ✍️

Another week ticked by and another round of Premier League games took place over the weekend, and as we progress further into 2025, the season moves from midway point towards the eventual finish line, and yet there are still many questions to be resolved in the final 15 rounds of fixtures. This weekend saw the leagues 2 surprise packages in Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest meet on Saturday afternoon, while relegation strugglers Ipswich, Southampton and Wolves all had tricky fixtures against Liverpool, Newcastle and Arsenal respectively, and Enzo Maresca returned to the Etihad to take on former colleague Pep Guardiola who was in need of a performance after their Champions League struggles midweek.

Priced Out 💰

With players such as Marcus Rashford seemingly wanting out of Manchester United, he has become one of a few players in recent windows to have found themselves stuck for a move given their financial expectations. With being one of the highest paid players at United, but not involved due to his desire to leave the club, a lot of potential European moves are becoming difficult for the buying clubs to navigate as the fees involved in not only acquiring a player like Rashford, but the wage expectations are a huge stumbling block that may see a move become more unlikely as the window rolls on.

Despite the several European club interest, none of the moves have yet got out of first gear and Rashford remains out in the cold at United while this situation resolves itself.

After a much improved start to 2025, Ruben Amorim was hoping for back to back league wins at home where United have struggled this season, however with Brighton also enjoying a huge upturn in form, it gave United a very tough challenge. With huge areas of weakness being exposed by the visitors, plus a few errors from United themselves, they were beaten once again by the South coast visitors which led to even Amorim labelling this team as the “worst in Manchester United history”.

After 2 impressive performances in 2025, Amorim is showing that the players at his disposal are seeming to better understand the ideas of his setup, and the end of the hectic Christmas period is allowing more time on the training ground to implement his methods which has resulted in praise for his team in the draw with Liverpool and win over Arsenal in the FA Cup. With a home tie on Thursday evening against the bottom side Southampton, it was an opportunity to further boost morale and confidence in the side and show that it’s not just the big games where players will show up, and they can perform in games they should be expected to win.

Striker Dilemma ⚽️

After going behind in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Newcastle, and then going out of the FA Cup to 10-man Manchester United, Arsenal fans are crying out for a striker to come in and provide the missing piece of the jigsaw that Mikel Arteta has put together. With an abundance of chances in the aforementioned games, Arsenal could be looking out in the January market for a proven goal scorer to get on the end of the great chances that the side are putting together.

Questions remain around Victor Osimhen’s future, Sporting potentially looking to cash in on Viktor Gyokeres, Newcastle’s Isak showing proven Premier League quality and Marcus Rashford seeking a move out of Manchester, these are some of the potential names being mentioned among several others this window. Despite the financial restrictions all clubs are facing, it’s fair to say Arsenal need to resolve their scoring issues sooner rather than later, before any chance of silverware for another year comes to an end.

Sunday afternoon saw the reigning holders Manchester United enter into the latest edition of the FA Cup with a tricky away trip to Arsenal. Having already been beaten at the Emirates since Amorim took charge, this performance needed to bring the same levels of energy, determination and belief seen in the draw at Anfield 1 week prior, and it did just that. With United going ahead before allowing Arsenal to regain control following the Dalot red card, the equalising goal and a penalty save from Bayindir, this game had plenty of action before a penalty shootout victory saw United claim a huge morale boosting victory and progress through the tournament with a big win for the team to build upon.

In the opening game of 2025, Manchester United navigated the short trip across to Liverpool through the snow to face Europe’s best team of the season so far who were full of confidence, and the discussions were about quite how many goals Liverpool would win by. This didn’t quite go to plan for the home side however as United were at the best under Ruben Amorim thus far, with energy, aggression and a real determination which led to United opening the scoring thanks to a terrific finish from Martinez, and the eventual equaliser to seal the 2-2 draw from Amad late on. Given the discussions going into the game, United came away with huge amounts of credit, however even from within the squad the questions over consistency still remain.

Final Standings 📈

Moving past the halfway point of the season this last weekend, I have gone back through my predictions from the start of the season (with a video to come on the YouTube channel this week), and want to see now how people are viewing the current standings and how this might change in the second half of the campaign.

With Chelsea and Nottingham Forest surprising many to be in the top 4 places, while City have struggled to keep hold of the European places after a poor run in 2024, the table has been pretty unpredictable at this stage, but do you think it will be any different when we reach the final week of the season?

Let us know in the comments what your final 1st-20th standing will look like by the end of this season. With a fairly obvious 1st and 20th, it will be fascinating to see how the final standings look in many peoples opinions.

Silverware Or Competitive? 🏆

With Arsenal gearing up for a League Cup semi-final against Newcastle this evening, both sides are really needing to bring a piece of silverware to add to their impressive last 5 years.

For Arsenal, their last trophy came early in Arteta’s reign (FA Cup 2020 - ignoring Community Shield wins) and despite being competitive in the title race for the past few seasons, this squad and ‘era’ of Arteta could do with something that fans can look back at in years to come. While they will feel still involved in a title race and potentially able to challenge in Europe this season, the League Cup gives Arteta’s side an opportunity to quieten the talk that they can’t get things over the line, and actually could offer a boost that pushes them on for the rest of the campaign.

For Newcastle, the silverware need is even stronger, after their failure in the 2023 final over Manchester United, it’s back in 1955 when silverware last headed to St James’ Park (ignoring Championship wins). For Eddie Howe, last season’s Champions League run was a great experience and although impacting on the league form due to fatigue, injuries and a squad lacking depth, it’s clear that silverware of any kind will put this team into the Newcastle history books, and also again just like Arsenal lay down a marker for the project that is happening at the club. They want to compete at the top in England and also regularly in Europe, and silverware would help give them a drive to push on and bring more success to the club.

In the final game of 2024, United ended in the worst possible fashion as in front of the Old Trafford crowd, Amorim’s side were overpowered, outrun and outclassed across the board as Newcastle took a 2-0 victory which could have and arguably should have been so much worse. With Gary Neville remarking on the team being ‘pound for pound the worst team in the country’, Zirkzee being subbed in the first half to a chorus of boos and a midfield selection that defied belief, it’s fair to say Manchester United are not heading into 2025 with any hope or optimism.

Pound For Pound ❌

Gary Neville claimed this Manchester United side were ‘pound for pound one of the worst teams in the country’, and it’s hard to disagree with the first half against Newcastle, but is this the worst Manchester United team you have ever seen?

As a fan of the club, I’ve thankfully enjoyed a lifetime of success, strong team units and leadership at the club, but the last 10 years or so have certainly turned things on it’s head. Poor leadership throughout the club structure, mismatched squad building and players coasting through inflated contracts, and despite a few successes along the way some of those are even tarnished by what followed weeks after.

I think there are some definite reasons to be optimistic when looking at the club, and the manager and some players are certainly undeserving of being given this tag of the worst team, but when put together and with the hierarchy chaos and even the off-field cuts and lack of focus on the women’s setup, as a club this could well be the worst I’ve seen of things as a club.

As we saw out 2024 and headed into the new year, the Premier League provided some decent end of year entertainment as Manchester City managed to finally get a victory, Nottingham Forest ended the year at their very best, Liverpool showed huge dominance one again and Manchester United had a horrendous performance as they hosted Newcastle.
