Halfway Predictions

Halfway Predictions

As we hit the halfway point of the 2022/23 Premier League season, the dust of the World Cup has just about settled, the January window is heating up, and the table is starting to take shape. It’s been a campaign full of surprises so far, from Arsenal’s remarkable title charge to Newcastle’s unlikely Champions League push. But as we gear up for the run-in, let’s make a few bold (and maybe risky) predictions for how things will look come May.

Title Winners: Arsenal

Yes, you read that right. Arsenal, the team that hasn’t lifted the Premier League trophy since the Invincibles of 2003/04, look the real deal. Mikel Arteta’s side sit top with 47 points from 18 games, five clear of Manchester City, and there’s more than just youthful energy behind their surge. The football is fluid, the defence disciplined, and the atmosphere at the Emirates electric again.

Manchester City, of course, remain the lurking giant, Erling Haaland has already rewritten goal-scoring records, but Arsenal’s consistency and cohesion could just carry them over the line. If they can stay injury-free and keep that belief intact, this might finally be the year North London turns red again.

Prediction: Arsenal to win the Premier League.

Champions League: Manchester City, Manchester United & Newcastle United

City will push Arsenal all the way, no doubt. Pep Guardiola’s side might just fall short this time, but they’re not going anywhere. Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag deserves huge credit for steadying the ship at Old Trafford, Casemiro has been transformative, Marcus Rashford is on fire, and United look balanced again.

And how about Newcastle? Eddie Howe’s Magpies are the story of the season so far. Third in the table at the halfway mark, they’ve built success on defensive solidity and smart recruitment rather than splashing their new Saudi-backed wealth. With the fewest goals conceded in the league, they look well placed to secure European football, and maybe even a top-four finish.

Prediction: 1. Arsenal | 2. Manchester City | 3. Manchester United | 4. Newcastle United

Relegation: Southampton, Bournemouth & Everton

At the other end of the table, the fight for survival is shaping up to be brutal. Southampton, despite a change in management, look short of quality and cohesion. Bournemouth have spirit but lack Premier League depth, and while their attack can cause problems, their defence too often caves under pressure.

Everton, meanwhile, are in real trouble. The mood around Goodison Park is toxic, the goals have dried up, and Frank Lampard looks increasingly out of ideas. Unless major reinforcements arrive before the window shuts, the Toffees could be heading for their first relegation in over 70 years.

Prediction: 18. Everton | 19. Bournemouth | 20. Southampton

Top Scorer: Erling Haaland (Manchester City)

This one feels like cheating. The Norwegian robot has already scored 21 Premier League goals by mid-January, more than the Golden Boot winners managed in the whole of last season. Even if City’s title tilt falters slightly, Haaland is almost guaranteed to keep banging them in.

Prediction: Haaland to finish with 35+ league goals.

Player of the Year: Martin Ødegaard (Arsenal)

While Haaland might sweep up the headline awards, Martin Ødegaard has quietly been Arsenal’s heartbeat. The Norwegian playmaker has matured into a leader, orchestrating games with vision and precision. His influence on and off the ball makes Arsenal tick, and if they go all the way, expect him to collect the individual accolades too.

Prediction: Ødegaard as Player of the Year.

Manager of the Year: Mikel Arteta (Arsenal)

Pep Guardiola has built an empire, but Arteta is crafting a revolution. From eighth place finishes to genuine title contenders, his transformation of Arsenal is nothing short of remarkable. His tactical bravery, man-management, and patience are finally bearing fruit. Unless Newcastle break into the top two (which would be equally astonishing), Arteta’s name is on this award.

Prediction: Mikel Arteta to win Manager of the Year.

Surprise Package: Brighton & Hove Albion

Losing Graham Potter to Chelsea could have derailed their season, instead, Brighton have kicked on under Roberto De Zerbi. The Seagulls play some of the most attractive football in the league and continue to unearth hidden gems. Kaoru Mitoma looks like the next breakout star, and European qualification isn’t out of the question if they maintain this level.

Prediction: Brighton to finish in the top seven.

Final Thoughts

If the first half of the 2022/23 season has taught us anything, it’s to expect the unexpected. Arsenal are leading a title race nobody saw coming, Newcastle are dreaming of Champions League nights, and traditional giants like Chelsea and Liverpool are floundering.

The Premier League never fails to surprise, and with so much still to play for, the second half promises drama, goals, and maybe even history in the making.
