EFL Ones To Watch (2023/2024)

The EFL is always a breeding ground for emerging talent and potential stars of tomorrow. From Championship playmakers to fearless League Two full-backs, these five players are well worth keeping an eye on during the 2023/24 campaign.
1. Adam Wharton – Blackburn Rovers
A classy central midfielder with a wonderful sense of rhythm, Wharton plays like a seasoned pro despite his age. Comfortable receiving the ball under pressure, he breaks lines with crisp passing and isn’t afraid to drive forward when space opens up. This season will be about proving he can boss games week in, week out and add a few more goals and assists to his elegant all-round game.
2. Josh Coburn – Middlesbrough
Fresh from a productive loan spell in League One, Coburn returned to Boro eager to make an impact. A strong, bustling centre-forward, he thrives on physical battles and has a natural knack for being in the right place in the box. The big question for 2023/24 is whether he can translate his scoring instincts to Championship level and cement a regular starting spot.
3. Carl Rushworth – Swansea City
After starring for Lincoln in League One last season, Rushworth stepped up a level with Swansea to continue his development. A modern goalkeeper with sharp reflexes and confident distribution, he’s calm under pressure and quick off his line. His shot-stopping ability has never been in doubt, but this year will test his consistency against the sharper attacks of the second tier.
4. Junior Tchamadeu – Colchester United
Named League Two’s Young Player of the Season in 2022/23, Tchamadeu already feels like a seasoned campaigner. A dynamic right-back who loves to bomb forward, he combines power with relentless energy and isn’t shy in one-on-one duels. The challenge now is to sharpen his final ball and continue improving defensively as scouts from higher divisions keep a close watch.
5. Sean Roughan – Lincoln City
Equally comfortable at centre-back or left-back, Roughan brings a composed presence to Lincoln’s back line. He reads the game well, steps out confidently with the ball, and shows a maturity beyond his years. 2023/24 is all about nailing down a starting spot and proving he can handle the physical demands of League One over a long season.
