Premier League Week 34

Premier League week 34 was a busy one, with games scattered across the week, and teams battling for any advantage they can grab at this late stage of the season. With the title race still on fire, the European battle still undecided and teams in the relegation scrap now pushing to grab any edge they can in this battle, the final weeks of the season are proving to be tense and filled with plenty of dramatic moments and narratives.

As always, in this post we will be picking out 3 of the biggest talking points of the weekend, along with giving out the game of the week and player of the week awards. Title Race

The title race between Arsenal and Manchester City continued to unfold with almost mechanical consistency in week 34, neither side willing to yield even the slightest psychological edge. Arsenal’s approach has been defined by maturity in recent weeks, winning without fuss, controlling games without unnecessary risk, and showing the kind of resilience that has often eluded them in past run-ins. At this stage of the season, their ability to avoid drama has become a strength in itself.

City, as ever, remain relentless. Their narrow 1–0 victory over Burnley was a familiar story: territorial dominance, patience in possession, and the decisive moment taken when it arrived. These are the types of wins that underpin title triumphs, performances that may not dominate headlines but steadily accumulate points. Guardiola’s side have built their reputation on precisely this kind of late-season control.

What stands out most is the contrast in style but similarity in outcome. Arsenal are playing with a measured calm, while City operate with machine-like precision, yet both are arriving at the same destination: three points. There is little sign of nerves from either camp, which only heightens the sense that the title will be decided by the finest of margins, perhaps even goal difference or a single unexpected slip.

With only a few fixtures remaining, the narrative is no longer about who can go on a winning run, it’s about who can avoid the one mistake. week 34 did not shift the balance, but it reinforced the tension. Every game now feels like a final, and both Arsenal and City are passing their tests with unnerving regularity.

Europe

The battle for European qualification remains one of the most unpredictable subplots of the season, and week 34 only added to the chaos. Liverpool strengthened their claim with a controlled 3–1 victory over Crystal Palace, a result that reflected both their attacking depth and growing consistency at a crucial moment. They are peaking at the right time, and that momentum could prove decisive.

In contrast, Chelsea appear to be heading in the opposite direction. Their 3–0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion was not just a loss, but a performance that raised serious concerns, disjointed in midfield, blunt in attack, and vulnerable defensively. At a stage when clarity and cohesion are essential, Chelsea look uncertain, and their European hopes are slipping away accordingly.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa’s 1–0 defeat to Fulham was a reminder of how unforgiving this race can be. Villa have been one of the season’s most impressive sides, but dropped points like these carry greater weight in a tightly packed table. Fulham, meanwhile, showed professionalism and discipline, proving that mid-table sides can still have a decisive say in the outcome.

Then there’s AFC Bournemouth, whose 2–2 draw with Leeds United highlighted both their promise and their inconsistency. Their attacking play continues to impress, but defensive lapses remain an issue. The European race is not just about quality, it’s about timing, and right now, the teams that can string together results, rather than flashes of brilliance, are the ones gaining ground.

Relegation Battle

At the bottom of the table, week 34 delivered both clarity and confusion in equal measure. Nottingham Forest produced one of the performances of the weekend, dismantling Sunderland 5–0 in emphatic fashion. It was not just the result, but the manner of it, confident, aggressive, and clinical, that suggested a side beginning to believe in its survival chances.

Around them, the broader picture remains tense. Teams hovering just above the drop zone continue to struggle for consistency, and the psychological weight of the situation is becoming increasingly visible. Matches are tighter, risks are calculated, and mistakes are magnified. Even a single point can feel like a victory, while defeats carry long-lasting consequences.

What week 34 ultimately reinforced is the volatility of the relegation battle. Momentum can shift quickly, as Forest demonstrated, but it is fragile and easily lost. With only a handful of games remaining, the fight for survival is no longer about long-term form; it’s about who can handle the pressure in isolated, high-stakes moments.

Game of the week: Sunderland 0-5 Nottingham Forest While Sunderland vs Nottingham Forest on a Friday night might not sound like a must-watch, the dominant first half display from the visitors puts them in a perfect position to escape the relegation conversation, while they also have an eye on their upcoming Europa League semi-final first leg. Going into the break 4-0 ahead, Sunderland were shell-shocked by the display of their opponents, and this performance alongside the result will more than likely keep Forest in the league for another year.

Player of the week: Morgan Gibbs-White With captain Gibbs-White once again proving his influence, he bagged a goal and assist in the dominant win over Sunderland, showing a key hot streak of form at the right time which could see Premier League survival, European success and more than likely a spot on the plane for the upcoming World Cup squad.
