POTM (Premier League) – March 2024

March saw the slightly disrupted schedule for the final time before we hit the final stages of the season. With the last international break of the season taking away 2 weeks of the club calendar, we still managed to see a good handful of games being played out across the Premier League as the season starts to really heat up, and the marathon season becomes a sprint to the finish.

This months NextGoalWinner player of the month winner has been a tougher selection due to the disrupted schedule and international break along with several injuries to some key players, however in the league a few players have really stood out as their clubs are fighting for the final points to move them up the rankings.

Alexander Isak has been the shining light for Newcastle in March despite their well-documented injury woes. With several key players facing long-term absences, Isak has seemingly hit another rich vein of goal scoring as we saw over the festive period. With a total of 4 goals in 3 league outings, and 5 goal involvements in total, he has helped Newcastle to 2 key victories and played a part in a chaotic and arguably unfortunate defeat in the middle.

March 2nd: Newcastle United 3-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers – After failing to score since the loss to Manchester City on the 13th January 2024, Isak got things up and running for March just 14 minutes into the comfortable victory over Wolves. With Newcastle and Wolves missing several key players through injury, Isak got the scoring started for Newcastle as they claimed a confident victory over a side in Wolves who have impressed many this season. Although Isak was outshone in the game with teammate Anthony Gordon taking most of the plaudits, his 70 minutes showed his talents as along with scoring the opener he managed a 100% shot accuracy and received a 7.4/10 FotMob rating for his shift.

March 11th: Chelsea 3-2 Newcastle United – After their strong victory over Wolves, Newcastle struggled in the battle against an up and down Chelsea and it was Cole Palmer to make the difference on the night. With a 3-2 loss away at a chaotic Chelsea side, it highlighted the defensive frailties that come from this stuck together with bandages XI at Eddie Howe’s disposal. Isak was Newcastle’s standout who again despite being arguably outshone, he did get Newcastle’s first as he levelled up the score at 1-1 just before half-time. As we saw around the Christmas period, Isak seemed to be hitting the rich vein of scoring form which saw him go on a 4 game scoring streak, Newcastle fans were believing the same may be happening with 2 in 2 for his efforts.

March 30th: Newcastle United 4-3 West Ham United – After the defeat at Manchester City to end their FA Cup hopes, and the subsequent international break where Isak featured in the full 90 for Sweden’s win over Portugal and defeat to Albania, the league action continued and so did Isak’s league scoring run. In another high scoring and chaotic Newcastle game, Isak opened the scoring in the 6th minute with his first of 2 penalties. The second came to kickstart a big Newcastle comeback as they turned around the 3-1 deficit late in the game. With Isak netting both penalties, and the assist for Harvey Barnes’ equaliser at 3-3, he brought his goal tally to 4 in 3, and a league high goal involvements of 5 in 3 for the month of March. With another hot streak of scoring, he brought his season total to 19 goals, 1 away from doubling his debut Newcastle total from last year. With the league scoring streak and huge contributions in the wins over Wolves and West Ham, he is a deserved winner for the POTM award for March.
