Matchday 10
The 2022/2023 Premier League season is now into its tenth game week, and the entertainment continues to be relentless and thoroughly enjoyable.
As a result, we will be breaking down each round of fixtures by picking out 3 of the biggest talking points, covering the biggest results, goals and general talking points from the week. We then will round off by picking our player of the week and game of the week based on what we saw in that round of games.
Let us know over on Twitter (@NextGoalWinBlog) if you have seen anything in a game that you think we should be talking about, or have anything to share from what you’ve seen at a game that week. Any funny stories, tactical analysis or general comments will be featured.
Arteta’s Passion-Energy-Clarity
We all have now seen the impassioned Arteta team talks and sometimes random speeches to his troops, but whatever he’s said this year is paying off big time, as Arsenal are out to an early lead in the Premier League, and while they don’t want to admit this in any way, their fans will already be dreaming.
This weekend saw a big hurdle that their young talents helped overcome, as they edged past Liverpool with a 3-2 victory. The passion being shown from the Arsenal players and fans feels different from previous years, and there’s a genuine belief that they have the talent to take on any side, as many clubs would often dig in and defend against Liverpool, but Arsenal brought their game to their opponents. With a brace for 21 year old Saka and a goal inside the first few seconds for 21 year old Martinelli, things look very bright for this season and beyond at Arsenal.
Even Haaland Scored
Post international break, City have had some terrific results, beating rivals United 6-3, winning in the Champions League 5-0 and then this weekend cruising to victory over Southampton with a 4-0 win. With 15 goals scored and 3 conceded in their last 3, it’s hard to believe they aren’t already cruising their way to a quadruple this season.
At the heart of this, and netting 6 and setting up 2 of their last 15 goals, is the Norwegian goal machine Haaland. It’s almost going under the radar just how incredible he has been this season as we now just expect the goals from him. The only question may be that his goals perhaps aren’t making the complete difference in terms of the league table, but bagging the 4th of a 4-0 win is equally as important as any other goal.
City are cruising to results this season, but if they are to cut the gap with Arsenal, they will be looking for other teams in the league to step up and take points from them.
I Would Love It
The last time Newcastle made it to the Champions League (proper) was under the late great Bobby Robson, but things are on the up for the toon despite so long being mismanaged and underfunded from their ownership. In the early stages of the transition to global powerhouse under their disgustingly rich owners, Eddie Howe has already proven his worth at the upper echelons of the league table.
Having just breezed past Fulham 4-1, they went 1 better this week and hammered Brentford 5-1 this time out, and in front of their own fans, this one felt like something was seriously ready to erupt at St James Park. With only 1 loss in their first 10, they have started to turn draws into wins, and big wins as well. If this run can continue up to, and after the World Cup break, then it’s fair to say that Newcastle can begin planning for some European trips next year, whether in the Champions League or any of the alternative European routes.
Matchday 10 Player of the Week: Bruno Guimarães With 2 goals from 2 shots, the Brazilian maintained a 100% shots accuracy along with 83% pass accuracy, 100% dribble success and a big 7 recoveries. He was the main man for Howe as they brought about back to back big wins for Newcastle and their quest for Europe and possibly even the Champions League.
Matchday 10 Game of the Week: Arsenal 3-2 Liverpool Arsenal vs Liverpool over the last few seasons would have seen a title challenger taking on a Europa League place contender, and this year things had completely switched around as we saw league leaders Arsenal taking on a fairly mediocre Liverpool by their own standards. In a 5 goal entertaining match, Saka and Martinelli were show stealers as they claimed the 3 points, and helped to keep the early title dreams alive for Arteta’s side.
