Kitted Out – Scottish Premiership
Like many other football fans around the world, I can spend hours upon hours browsing aimlessly through Classic Football Shirt websites. There’s something about looking at an old kit from the early 2000’s that can just take me back to a specific match, goal or moment in life which may have been long forgotten. Meanwhile, I enjoy looking through the wild designs that have somehow made it to production, the bold colours and pieces from around the globe. Although admittedly my personal collection of kits from the past doesn’t extend past my own club and holiday souvenirs, I am fully in support of the trend towards using “retro” shirts as a fashionable item, and for allowing me to spend far too much time in my own little world reminiscing on historic football games, long may the businesses continue.
So to celebrate some of my favourite football shirts that I have come across over the years, I’ve decided to put together my top 5 from around the leagues, this time, looking into Scotland, and Scottish Premiership (and all previous names for the league). Admittedly, this is personal opinions and not all tastes are the same, however I believe these are widely recognised as some of the greatest shirts from Scotland. Additionally, as will become clear looking through these, I have a personal fondness towards a collared shirt, fairly simple designs and more ‘traditional’ colours to the individual club.
Enjoy.
*We have decided not to feature any images with these kit choices due to image rights issues and wanting to produce our own imagery in the future. Apologies if this makes the reading more challenging or difficult.*
Celtic 1965-1972 (H)
Of course we had to include the 2 biggest sides in Scotland, so allow us to get them out of the way early. Starting off with what we believe to be Celtic’s top kit from their history, a simple design reflective of the time period in which sponsors, elaborate design and even the club crest wasn’t included, just the most simple green and white hooped design to start us off.
Although in the social media age, we have kit launches from the likes of Barcelona down to non-league and even amateur sides, however it might be equally as refreshing to see something as simple as this shirt again in the future.
This shirt not only looks classic, simple and traditional, but the history of the period in Celtic’s history only adds to it. Becoming the first British side to win the European cup in 1967 against the odds, Celtic made history in this shirt, and for that reason, it tops the list.
Rangers 1997-1999 (H)
Moving onto the other obvious selection, we have our top choice from Rangers. In the late 90s, their squad was packed with huge names, and for that it makes the top of our list.
Not only does this shirt tick the boxes for what I’m looking for, with a collar design, cuffed sleeves, simple design and traditional sponsor of McEwan’s lager, but the players who donned it include; McCoist, Laudrup, Negri, Gascoigne and even Gattuso. So many legendary names, and as treble winners in the 98-99 campaign, it’s got plenty of history to go with the fantastic design.
Aberdeen 1982-1983 (H)
Led by legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Aberdeen won the European Cup Winners Cup in a historic campaign for the side, and did so in style, with their home shirt one of the best that we’ve included in this list.
With a classic Adidas design, and white stripes down the shirt, it combines style with tradition and maintains a simple but fashionable design which would surely be one for the hipsters to be getting their hands on. Another shirt to include history and a quality design guarantee’s it’s spot on this list.
Falkirk 1991-1992 (A)
A slightly more obscure selection is one we found on Classic Football Shirts, and has been selected primarily for its design. With a collar and white base, the sleeves contain a fantastic red, black and white design.
The season itself was a decent success as they had just been promoted to the top-flight, and secured a 9th placed finish. Quite often going from promotion to relegation seasons between the top division and second division, earning the 9th placed spot ensured a stable season for Falkirk between their successes and relegations. Additionally they enjoyed a run to the quarter-final of the Scottish Cup before losing out to Hearts.
Dundee United 1980
Dundee United always seem to have quality kits, mainly standing out due to their bright orange colour scheme, but this one in a very similar style to the previously mentioned Aberdeen shirt, brings about a traditional Adidas design but with some history of their successful Scottish League Cup run. Winning both the 1980 and 1981 League Cup, Dundee United enjoyed back to back success and with their terrific shirt, have one for the history books and round of our list nicely.
