POTM (Europe) – May 2021
The season is at an end, or at least the club season is and we will hurtle towards international football with no sign of a break. Despite the never-ending footballing calendar, some players have not let up or shown signs of fatigue, and in fact have finished the season with a real run of form. One of these players who has been consistently solid all season long and has kept his foot on the gas until the very end, to become a record breaker in the process is the goal machine Robert Lewandowski.
The Polish striker has had a record breaking, trophy winning and goal scoring season once again, this time bagging 48 goals in just 40 games, with 41 of them coming in only 29 Bundesliga games, which earnt him the European Golden Shoe and broke Gerd Müller’s record of 40 goals in the 1971-72 season. In the month of May, he scored 5 and bagged 1 assist in just 3 games this month as his Bayern side romped home with yet another Bundesliga title.
With May being the end of the club season, the NextGoalWinner POTM awards will return in august and the return of club football.
Match By Match
May 8th: Bayern Munich 6-0 Borussia Mönchengladbach – This dominant performance was truly the Lewandowski show, as he bagged 3 goals and set up another in a man of the match, 10/10 performance. In the 90 minutes, he got 8 shots away and created 3 big chances. Meanwhile, he made 21 passes and was an absolute nightmare for the Gladbach defenders who even now must be waking up in a cold sweat thinking about defending against the Polish striker.
May 15th: SC Freiburg 2-2 Bayern Munich – In his second game of the month, Lewandowski netted his 4th goal in the month as Munich surprisingly dropped 2 points away at Freiburg. His personal xG was at 2.37 which shows how much of a handful he was for the Freiburg defenders, peppering the goal with 7 shots. Although his side dropped points, they won’t mind too much having sewn the title up a long time prior, and this goal put Lewandowski within 1 of that infamous Gerd Müller record which many thought would remain unmatched.
May 22nd: Bayern Munich 5-2 FC Augsburg – On the final day of the season, and in the 90th minute, Lewandowski got his goal, the goal to etch his name in the history books and beat the 71-72 record of 40 goals in a season as he netted his 41st goal in just his 29 league appearances. Although leaving it until literally the last minute of the season, it was a truly deserved goal after what has been a remarkable season and surely must put him in contention for major individual awards and accolades in the not too distant future. A great player and a remarkable season.
