Stats – Weird and Wonderful (21-30)

I bloody love a good random football fact. It’s what at least half of my brain space is taken up with on a daily basis. And so for this post I figured I would try to research and discover some of the most unusual facts, stats and stories from the footballing world.

Despite my best efforts to factcheck all these nuggets of information, I cannot guarantee their validity 100%, however if you want to correct me, why not send me a nicely worded tweet. And should you decide to share any of these with your friends down at the pub… remember nobody likes a know-it-all, as I’ve been told many times before.

1. Former Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger has an asteroid named after him. The Asteroid called 33179 Arsènewenger was discovered in 1998 and named after the then Arsenal gaffer by a big fan.

2. The Isles of Scilly football league is made up of just 2 clubs; the Garrison Gunners and the Woolpack Wanderers. They play each other every week and also in the 2 domestic cups. The season also starts with a Charity Shield match between the 2.

3. In 2002, Ronaldo based his now-infamous haircut on a cartoon character, Cascao, and stated he felt terrible when he saw children copy the style.

4. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a keen sportsman, and even lined up for Portsmouth Association Football Club as their goalkeeper under the name A.C. Smith.

5. Dimitar Berbatov was a childhood Newcastle United fan, with his hero being the legendary striker Alan Shearer.

6. Phillip Lahm went a full 13 months without committing a foul between September 2014 and October 2015.

7. Arsenal winger Willian has netted more Champions League goals than Ronaldinho.

8. 24 year old Kingsley Coman has won a league title every year that he has been a professional footballer, and has amassed 20 major trophies (at time of writing).

9. In their 2010 World Cup win, Spain only scored a total of 8 goals in the entire tournament.

10. Between 1998-2003, German side Wolfsburg had a manager by the name of Wolfgang Wolf.
