POTM (Premier League) – September 2020
It’s the first ever month of the NextGoalWinner Player of the Month (Premier League), and this month’s winner takes the prize to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the South Korean magician, Son Heung-min.
Tottenham had a fairly decent start to the season this month, picking up 4 points from 9 in the league, and 6 from 6 in the Europa League. These results are primarily down to the brilliance of Son and his link-up with Kane which is looking incredible at the early stages of this new campaign.
So, if you were living under a rock this September, allow us to fill you in with the details of the brilliant month from Sonny.
The Stats
There has been some serious competition for the player of the month award in September, with the likes of DCL, Salah and Kane all impressing as the season got going. However, it was Son who impressed throughout with individual brilliance. Throughout the month, he played in 6 games, and bagged 6 goals and 2 assists, including the 4 against Southampton.
According to WhoScored’s rating system, Son averaged an 8.1/10 for the 3 league matches he was involved in, and although the results in the league weren’t perfect by any means, the win over Southampton and sheer dominance of the performance put Son as the star man for the month.
One of the big factors in the performances has been his link-up with Kane, and it will be fascinating to watch the partnership continue to blossom throughout a packed season.
Match By Match
September 5th: Watford 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur – In their 4th and final pre-season friendly, Spurs fell victim to a 2-1 defeat over recently relegated Watford. Son played the full 90 minutes and bagged the only goal for the visitors, however it certainly wasn’t the ideal preparation for Jose’s men.
September 13th: Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Everton – This pre-season form unfortunately followed Tottenham into the opening game of the Premier League as they again fell victim to Ancelotti’s immense looking Everton side. Everton showed they are meaning real business this season as they took the 3 points from the Tottenham Hotspur stadium. Again, Son played the full 90, however had little impact, as this was his worst performance of the 3 Premier League games this month. With his 41 touches, he had 2 shots (1 on target) and made 3 key passes. Although he was Spurs’ top rated player, a 6.74/10 wasn’t really fitting with what was to come from the Korean.
September 17th: Lokomotiv Plovdiv 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur – Tottenham had a change in fortunes after the half-way point through September, as they opened their Europa League campaign with a successful win in Bulgaria. Once again, Son was ever-present in the game, however didn’t contribute to either of Spurs’ winning goals. He again made 2 shots with 1 on target as he wasn’t as influential as may have been expected. With his 51 touches in this one, he made 2 key passes and earnt himself a 6.41/10 rating.
September 20th: Southampton 2-5 Tottenham Hotspur – Mourinho’s men got all 3 points in some style against Southampton, and if a player of the month award was ever given from just 1 performance, this is it for Son. Bagging 4 of the 5 goals for his side, Son dominated with a 10/10 performance. Kane assisted all 4 and bagged 1 for himself, however without Son and his finishing, Spurs could easily have fallen to 2 straight league defeats. With 4 shots and 4 goals, Son was on point and was 1 half of the dominant duo in this one. These types of performances must have other sides in the league put on alert.
September 24th: KF Shkendija 1-3 Tottenham Hotspur – 3 wins in a row, and 2 from 2 in the Europa League, Spurs this time headed over to Northern Macedonia and picked up the win. With a goal and 2 assists, Son again proved crucial in the victory, and was again rewarded with a fantastic 9.36/10 rating and a MoTM award. He setup Lamela as well as returning one to Kane alongside netting his own. His 4th 90 minute performance and another cracker.
September 27th: Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Newcastle United – In the final game of the month, Spurs’ again were exposed in the league as they followed 3 wins with a drab draw against Newcastle. Coming off as a half-time sub with his side leading 1-0, Spurs fell victim to a 96th minute penalty from Wilson to equalise for the visiting team, and mean Spurs have just 4 points from a possible 9, which isn’t the ideal start for Mourinho’s men. In this one, Son was on the verge of another stunning performance, as he hit the woodwork twice, however it just wasn’t his day as he left the field at half-time.
Overall, it was a mixed bag from Spurs and from Son, however the run of games in the middle of the month is what earns Son this momentous first ever NextGoalWinner POTM.
