Back in the Champions League!

Manchester United have returned to the Champions League after a few years away, and with European competition guaranteeing a longer season than the last campaign, this return couldn’t have gone much better. Although played on a Thursday night (I thought we’d ended the Thursday night games), the result and performance was as good as expected against a lesser opponent and arguably the nicest of United’s 8 opponents in the group stage. The win allowed for rotation and minutes for young stars on the very biggest club stage.

Manchester United 4-0 Sabah

Manchester United marked their return to the Champions League with a commanding 4-0 victory over Azerbaijani champions Sabah at Old Trafford on Thursday night. Michael Carrick’s side made the most of their first appearance in Europe’s premier competition in three seasons, combining patience with attacking quality to put the visitors under sustained pressure. Sabah, making their own debut in the Champions League league phase, showed plenty of courage in the opening exchanges, but United gradually took control as the evening unfolded.

The breakthrough arrived in the 27th minute through Matheus Cunha. Patrick Dorgu’s inviting cross found the Brazilian, who applied a clean finish to give United the lead after a period of growing pressure. Sabah had a golden opportunity to respond when Kaheem Parris picked out Joy-Lance Mickels at the far post, but the forward could only head wide. That miss proved costly, as United struck twice in the closing stages of the half. Bruno Fernandes finished a flowing move involving Youri Tielemans to make it 2-0 in the 42nd minute, before Benjamin Šeško raced clear from Bryan Mbeumo’s pass and calmly rounded the goalkeeper to put United three goals ahead before the interval.

With the result looking increasingly secure, United were able to manage the second half without losing their attacking rhythm. Sabah continued to compete and had moments when they threatened to find a way back into the contest, but the home side’s greater quality in the final third kept the visitors at arm’s length. The fourth goal arrived in the 68th minute, with Lisandro Martínez finishing from close range after a clever piece of play involving substitute Joshua Zirkzee and a Fernandes free-kick. It capped another productive European evening for United and gave the home supporters plenty to enjoy.

There was still time for Sabah to search for a consolation, with Mickels firing wide and substitute Orphe Mbina clipping the crossbar in stoppage time, but United held firm to complete a clean sheet and a thoroughly convincing opening-night victory. The 4-0 scoreline also provided an early boost to their goal difference in the league-phase format, while the performances of Cunha, Fernandes and Šeško gave Carrick plenty of attacking encouragement. After three seasons away from the competition, United could hardly have asked for a more emphatic Champions League welcome back.

Talking Points

We have to start with United returning to the Champions League after almost 3 years, as their last Champions League game came back in December 2023 and their largely disappointing group stage exit. With some tough opponents to come, the clash with the unfavoured Sabah couldn’t have been a more perfect start for Carrick and co, especially given the uncertain start to their league season. However, with 4 goals, a clean sheet and a home return to the top European competition, and United will feel they are back where the club expects after an uncertain few years.

The game itself couldn’t have gone much better, with 4 goals from 4 separate scorers including a 2nd in 2 games for Benjamin Sesko, a clean sheet for the first time in the season after conceding 2 in their opening 3 games, and an ability to bring on 2 young stars in Harry Amass and Shea Lacey for 20 minute cameos. With Lacey one of the players expected to feature across this season and make the step up to the first team and challenge Mbeumo and Amad for a spot in the XI, Amass getting minutes is a huge bonus given the failure to bring in a left-back this summer to challenge Shaw and Dorgu in the role.

Finally, United cannot get carried away from this result. While they’ve had 2 good wins so far this season, their loss against Hull and disappointing draw with Everton means the season hasn’t been smooth in the early stages, and their clash with rivals Manchester City on Sunday and midweek clash with Brighton in the League Cup next week could be a huge marker for how these early games are viewed. A big win in the Champions League opener sounds great, however anything but a good showing in the next 2 games will bring all the pressure piling back on.
