Well that was more like it!

After Manchester United suffered an opening day defeat to promoted Hull City in surprising circumstances, they had a chance to redeem themselves against another newly promoted side, this time with the Old Trafford home crowd cheering the team on. With 4 changes to the starting XI, and the thunderstorm incoming, United fell behind after some more questionable defending, but with a bit of luck and plenty of determination they put themselves back into cruise control to produce a solid victory with plenty of positives.

Manchester United 5-2 Ipswich Town

Manchester United produced a stirring second-half comeback to beat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford on Sunday, securing their first Premier League victory of the 2026/27 season. Michael Carrick’s side had to recover from a nervy start and an early deficit, but eventually turned the game into a convincing victory, with captain Bruno Fernandes stealing the show with a magnificent hat-trick. The afternoon had begun with plenty of concern around Old Trafford, particularly after United’s disappointing defeat to Hull City on the opening weekend, and those nerves were heightened when Ipswich threatened early through Julio Enciso and Daizen Maeda. The visitors then took a deserved lead in the 29th minute, as Abdul Fatawu burst beyond Luke Shaw before finding Leif Davis, who calmly swept the ball into the net.

United gradually found their rhythm, and the equaliser arrived five minutes before half-time thanks to a moment of fortune and some quick thinking. Marcelino Núñez slipped in midfield, allowing Matheus Cunha to seize possession and feed Fernandes, who made no mistake with a powerful left-footed finish. It was precisely the kind of response Carrick would have wanted from his players after falling behind, and it changed the atmosphere inside Old Trafford. United emerged after the interval with far greater purpose and finally moved ahead in the 56th minute, although the goal came amid controversy. Harry Maguire’s effort was diverted into his own net by Jacob Greaves, with VAR checking a possible handball by Maguire before confirming the goal. Under the rules, the accidental handball did not prevent the goal from standing because Maguire was not the immediate goalscorer.

Once United had their noses in front, the floodgates opened. Greaves brought down Cunha inside the area shortly afterwards, giving Fernandes the opportunity to double his personal tally from the penalty spot, and the Portuguese captain coolly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 3-1. Seven minutes later, Fernandes completed his hat-trick, finishing from close range to put United firmly in control and send Old Trafford into celebration. His performance was the defining feature of an increasingly impressive United display, with the captain showing exactly why he remains such an influential figure in Carrick’s side. Bryan Mbeumo then added further gloss in the 82nd minute with a long-range finish, taking United’s tally to five and completing a remarkable turnaround from the afternoon’s uncertain opening.

Ipswich did manage a late consolation when Chuba Akpom reacted quickest to a loose ball in the United box and fired home in the first minute of stoppage time, but it did little to alter the overall picture. United had transformed a difficult afternoon into a statement victory, scoring five times and displaying the attacking confidence that had been missing in their opening-week defeat. For Carrick, perhaps the most encouraging aspect was not simply the scoreline but the way his players responded to adversity, recovering from Davis’s opener and growing stronger as the game progressed. Fernandes understandably took the headlines, but the result as a whole offered United supporters plenty of reason for optimism: after a difficult opening week, the Reds have their first win of the campaign and some valuable momentum heading into September.

Talking Points

The first talking point will no doubt be the slight controversy about United’s second which put the game well and truly in their favour. With Maguire judged to have handballed in the build-up, he was saved as his strike was initially going wide until Ipswich’s Greaves put the ball into his own net, allowing United to benefit from a loophole around the rules given the handball involvement in the lead-up being nullified by the own goal deflection. Along with this beneficial decision, United had also been fortunate with their initial equaliser as Cunha was able to pounce on a rogue pass and set up his teammate thanks to a lapse in concentration from the visitors. Finally, the penalty was the least controversial of the lot, but still perhaps seen as a little bit lucky due to giving United a chance to turn their second half dominance into an unassailable lead that they could continue to build upon. While these decisions will no doubt balance out across the season, United getting any decision will always hit the headlines due to the nature of the club support.

On a more positive note, United had some huge standout performances from Bruno Fernandes who bagged a hat-trick, Kobbie Mainoo who ran the midfield in his first start of the season and Marcus Rashford who returned to the starting XI since 2024. While the transfer window still being open leaves questions on any potential incomings and even the future of Rashford, seeing these 3 among several others putting in a shift puts aside any concerns seen in the opening fixture. While there will be tougher tests ahead across a long and gruelling season in all competitions, having their key players feeling like they’ve now arrived means no excuses to continue building on this victory.

Finally, United now sit with 3 points from 6 and although the win doesn’t put aside the disappointment of the Hull defeat entirely, the manner of victory was near-perfect as a slender win would have still brought questions, but scoring 5 and showing some impressive attacking displays means United can look forward and ahead to their clash with Everton next weekend, knowing that they sit ahead of potential European challengers in Liverpool, Villa and Tottenham even at this very early stage of the season.
